Abbott, Lyman
(18 dic. 1835, Roxbury, Mass., EE.UU.–22 oct. 1922, Nueva York, N.Y.).

Ministro estadounidense. Hijo del escritor Jacob Abbott (1803–79), abandonó el ejercicio de la abogacía para estudiar teología y se ordenó en 1860. Fue jefe de redacción del semanario tyIllustrated Christian Weekly/ty desde 1870 y director del periódico tyChristian Union/ty, de Henry Ward Beecher, en 1881. En 1888 sucedió a Beecher en el púlpito, en Brooklyn. Llegó a ser un exponente destacado del movimiento del Social Gospel (Evangelio social) que procuró aplicar la doctrina cristiana a los problemas sociales e industriales, rechazando tanto el socialismo como la economía del laissez faire. En otros asuntos, representó el punto de vista del protestantismo evangélico liberal.
